Sydney Night Life

Tuesday 8 November

Sydney is undeniably bursting with cafés, bars, restaurants and pubs – with new venues opening almost weekly. Attempting to choose a place to relax over a quiet meal and/or beverage can sometimes be a little daunting. To help guide you with your choice of a post-conference debrief location, a few local treasures have been listed below for your perusal.

Near to ATP – local flavours of Redfern

Lord Raglan – a pub near to ATP (an 8 minute walk) that specialises in craft beer. They also offer an American-style pub menu with many burgers to choose from. This pub has recently been taken over by The Rocks Brewing Co. which means patrons are spoilt for choice when it come to beer selections. The décor is simple, potentially leaning on a tad bare but very welcoming – and for the gamers, they have 6 pinball machines at the back of the pub to keep your mind active.

Arcadia Liquors – one of Redfern’s original small bars. As suggested in the name there is more drinking than dining, however you can grab a toasted sandwich to accompany your beverage. A courtyard extends out the back, a nice place to relax in the warm Sydney afternoon weather. Fairy lights on the roof create a very inviting atmosphere and with plenty of seating. It is a very nice place to unwind and relive the days activities.

Eateries around Redfern – if you are just after some delicious food and want to stay relatively close to ATP, there are a range of options surrounding Redfern’s main street (Redfern St)- roughly a 15-20 min walk. On Pitt St, there is the Pitt St Diner which is a cosy café with old-school charm. A little further along is Eat House Diner (serving delicious Southern US food) and Patagonian Toothfish (serving South American Tapas). There is also a Korean restaurant opposite Redfern Park called Moon Park. All of these eateries are open for dinner on a Tuesday night and are only a short walk back to Redfern train station (8 min).

Sydney CBD

Being in Sydney means being surrounded by the beautiful Sydney Harbour and if you’d rather be taking in the amazing views while recalling the days events the options below may be more to your taste.

Opera Bar – Some say the most enviable location in Sydney, Opera Bar is the prime vantage point for taking in the sites of Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Opera House. With a range of outdoor covered seating, it is a beautiful place to enjoy a warm November evening.

Glenmore Hotel – If you are after something a little cheaper and more relaxed than Opera Bar, then the Glenmore is a great option. The rooftop bar is the ideal location to admire the beautiful Sydney Harbour landscape, the food and beverage menu is ample and cater to most tastes.

Orbit Bar – For those of us that like a fancy cocktail and a stunning view – Orbit Bar is the perfect location! It is a revolving bar/restaurant on level 47 of the Australia Square building and is quite reasonably priced (for Sydney standards). Up in the bar you will be greeted with an amazing 360 degree view of the Sydney skyline – I suggest heading there for a sunset cocktail, the best time of day.

Café Sydney – A favourite with Sydney-siders, this impressive (upper market) restaurant would be an unforgettable dinner option. Located on the rooftop of Customs House, the restaurant offers spectacular harbour views while eating delicious food in the outdoor terrace, or sipping on some cocktails in the relaxed and contemporary lounge.

Jamie’s Italian and Mejico are two more affordable options for dinner on Tuesday night (that doesn’t involve a bar). Both are conveniently located (side-by-side) on Pitt Street. Jamie’s offers delicious hearty-housemade pastas, while Mejico is some of the best Mexican dining in the city. Another Italian restaurant (just around the corner on Bridge St) that never disappoints is Fratelli Fresh, serving up handmade pastas and seasonal dishes in its subterranean location that was once a spice market.

Another option for food is Surry Hills, only a short walk from central station where there is ample choices. Some favourites include Spice I Am (Thai), El Bulli (Spanish), Jazushi (Sushi and Japanese with nightly jazz bands) and Yulli’s (Vegetarian).
